About Namibia
|
|
All of our charity challengers return from Namibia touched by
its natural splendour, by the stark and refreshing contrast that Namibia provides to the hectic lifestyles that we lead in Europe, and by the sheer beauty of the desert.
|
'Imagine a place where it would appear that nothing could survive. Where desert brings thoughts of vast open spaces and limitless horizons. This is a place with moon landscapes and canyons and a self sustaining ecosystem that brings these dreams to life' ....taken from ATD Expedition Leaders charity expedition report.

Namibia Charity Desert Trek
Your fundraising trek will cover between 100 and 120km through Damaraland in the northern Namib Desert, and in the shadow of Brandberg Mountain the countries highest peak. We hope to see game including zebra, ostrich, gemsbok, and springbok and might even be lucky enough to get a rare sighting of cheetah, leopard or brown hyena in the mountains. To hear first hand what it's like on the Namibia charity desert trek click here to read an article by Pete van Dongan. |

Namibia Multi Activity Charity Challenge
The Skeleton Coast is generally regarded as the most hostile stretch of coastline in the world. The area is dotted with ancient shipwrecks and human skeletons that still provide apparitions of its violent past. Our challenge takes place in the inhospitable environment of this, the oldest desert in the world. We witness the sheer beauty displayed by the endless space of gravel plains, distant ridges and mountains, dramatic upheavals of granite inselbergs and the clearest of blue skies, as we trek, ride and abseil through the desert. |
| Namibia Charity Project We have a wide range of fantastic projects on offer in Namibia, a selction of which are featured below.
The first is an elephant project where the aim is to provide aid and support to the local communities who are constantly in conflict with the elephant population. As populations of both humans and elephants are increasing, property such as wells and pumps can be damaged, and in some cases people can be hurt or killed. Our local partners try to seek solutions to this problem by building alternative water points for the elephants to use, putting protection walls around local farmers’ water points, and educating the local communities with regard to elephant behaviour, as well as carrying out vital research into elephant populations and behaviours. Our second project involves working with the locals who live in this harshest of environments helping to refurbish the kindergarten used by the locals of the area. This unforgettable adventure takes place below the stunning 1,784m high Spitzkoppe (‘Pointed Hill’ in Afrikaans), and the surrounding hills. These magnificent blood red granite peaks were formed from volcanic cores that have subsequently been exposed by millions of years of erosion. Known as the Matterhorn of Africa, the main peak rises 700m above the surrounding plain. A beautiful setting, with ample opportunities to explore, climb, abseil, or discover the ancient Bushman paintings whilst enjoying the clear desert air and star bathed night skies. Responsible Tourism
Across the Divide is very fortunate to have been given special permission to provide charity treks in the northern Naukluft Park - in fact we are the only company that is presently allowed to do so. The reason for this unique opportunity is firstly that the groups we are working with are all charity challenge groups, and secondly that we work very closely with the local rangers to ensure that we have minimum impact in the environment. Hand-in-hand with this we financially support two Namibian organisations: The Lappet-faced Vulture Conservation Foundation (specific to the area in which we trek) and the Save The Rhino Trust (SRT), an organisation based in the town of Swakopmund and whose work is countrywide as well as being an international resource for the conservation of this magnificent animal. In the past few years ATD has donated over £10,000 of its own funds to support invaluable conservation work in the area. Across the Divide has been in Namibia providing charity challenge expeditions for ten years and has built up one of the best equipped and trained support teams in Southern Africa. Our charity treks, charity projects and charity bike rides work hand-in-hand with local communities and companies to provide a win-win situation for all concerned. |
Other highlights include: Etosha is one of the largest and best game viewing parks in the whole of Africa. The reason for this lies in the name, Etosha which means 'huge white area' or 'place of dry water.. For most of the year a vast shallow pan, which was once a lake the size of Holland, shimmers a glaring bright white from crystallized salt across its entire surface. Surrounding the pan is a variety of grass and woodlands amongst which live a wonderful variety of animals and birds. The Skeleton Coast. Ghostly shipwrecks on remote and inaccessible shores has given the Skeleton Coast it's well-deserved name. This 2 million-hectare (20,000²km) park is one of the most inhospitable and least visited places on earth and is divided into northern and southern sections. Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia is second only in grandeur to the USA’s Grand Canyon in Arizona. It is absolutely magnificent and breathtaking in its immensity. Rock stratas of purples, pinks and greys stretch along a 100-mile (161km) course. Yet it comes as something of a shock when you arrive at the canyon, as you have no idea it is there. It drops vertically by 1,800ft (550m) out of a flat arid plateau without any warning, even though at some points it is 17 miles (27km) wide! |
